The Difference Between Plastic Mould and Plastic Mould (Terminological Clarification)

In fact, the terms “plastic mould” (using the Chinese character for general plastic) and “plastic mould” (using the character for plastic with a focus on softer or highly insulating materials) essentially refer to the same thing: tools used to shape plastic into products. The only nuance is that the term “plastic” in the second sense often refers to softer plastics or those with excellent insulating properties. To clarify this further, we can look at the following aspects.

First, what is the difference in the materials they handle? The general term “plastic mould” covers a wide range. It can process any plastic, whether it is thermoplastics that soften when heated and harden when cooled, or thermosetting plastics that become permanently set after heating and do not soften again. The more specific term “plastic mould” (with the character for softer/insulating plastic) is used mainly for that subgroup of plastics. That subgroup is characterised by being made of high‑polymer synthetic resins, having good plasticity, and maintaining a stable shape after forming.

Second, what is the difference in the products they make? Because the general‑purpose moulds cover a wide range, the products they produce are also diverse. Everyday items such as plastic basins, bottles, pipes, and electronic device housings are typically made using such moulds. The more specialised moulds focus on products that require high electrical, thermal, and acoustic insulation – for example, electrical components and insulating materials, which are better suited to this type of mould.

Third, how are they manufactured? In this respect, there is essentially no difference between the two. The entire process – from design drawings to machining and manufacturing, then to debugging and actual production – is nearly identical. It can be said to be the same set of techniques.

In summary, “general plastic mould” and “specialised plastic mould” are like two brothers: their function is the same, both being used to shape plastic into products. The subtle difference is that the specialised mould focuses more on insulating plastics and the products made from them. In practice, you can choose based on your product’s material and required properties; the name you use makes little difference.
